Have your existing skills, knowledge, experience and training recognised towards a qualification or occupation.
Recognition of Prior Learning
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a way of formally recognising your existing skills and experience towards a vocational education and training (VET) qualification. RPL may help you:
- reduce the time and cost of your course
- enhance your career opportunities
- gain recognition for your existing learning
- not repeat already learned course material
- build your career confidence.
How RPL works
The RPL process considers your relevant skills, knowledge and experience, including:
- paid or unpaid work
- community work
- completed training
- life experience.
You’ll be asked to provide relevant evidence for RPL assessment. If you can demonstrate that you have the necessary skills and experience, you may be granted exception from some units of competency within your qualification.
If you have been working in a trade in Australia but have no formal qualifications, you can have your skills assessed through RPL.
Apply for RPL
To apply for RPL before or during your qualification, speak to your training provider.
Credit transfer recognises previously completed training that may provide credit towards a qualification.
Previously completed training may include units, qualifications or university studies in similar or related fields to the qualification or degree you’re undertaking.
To apply for credit transfer, speak to your training provider.
Recognise your overseas qualifications
If you’ve gained qualifications outside of Australia, you can have them assessed to enable you to work in your trade or occupation.
An assessment can:
- improve your employment prospects
- help an employer understand the educational level of your overseas qualification.
